Many of you have heard about the ALS ice bucket challenge. ALS is currently affecting 12,000 people in the U.S. In fact, Stephen Hawking is one of ALS’s victims. Charles Kennedy, a golfer from Florida, was responding to a challenge from a friend who told him “Pour ice over your head and I’ll donate to the charity of your choice.” Kennedy chose ALS as his charity because of a family member that suffered from the disease. Charles then challenged his cousin’s wife. It spread all over from there. Corey Griffin, a philanthropist, really helped the ALS ice bucket challenge go viral. It spread to athletes all over Boston. Tom Brady was then nominated, and from there, whole football teams were being nominated. After the football teams were challenged, celebrities started being challenged like Justin Timberlake. Even Oprah Winfrey, Tim McGraw, Ben Affleck, and Katy Perry have all taken the challenge. The ALS foundation has raised $79.7 million dollars since July 29. Imagine how much more they have raised since then. The amount of money they raised in the same period last year was $2.5 million. That is one huge jump in donations from the challenge going viral. All of this information was received from a presentation on the website prezi.com. Many people in Burlington have taken this challenge. Have you?
