Dear Jane,

My life is turning upside-down. My best friend just came out to me. He hasn’t made it public yet. When he told me, I didn’t know how to react. I said I had to go, then left the room.

I feel really badly for how I handled it, and I don’t know what to do. We’ve been best friends for as long as I can remember, and now I can’t even recognize him.

Jane, help me figure out all these mixed emotions.

                             Sincerely,

                                  Confused Carlos

Dear Confused Carlos,

First of all, you’ve got it all wrong. No matter his sexuality, he’s still the same person. Don’t stop being his friend because he’s brave enough to open up to you.

It’s very hard to come out, and you need to respect him. My advice is to go and apologize for not handling it well.

Don’t be a bad friend. I wish you luck on your apology and a happy life for your friend.

                           Respectfully,

Jane
